The Lake District is the one area of England where typically oceanic or northern montane mosses and liverworts can thrive. Cumbria as a whole has a wide diversity of habitats and Teesdale has some very rare limestone specialists.

Derbyshire's moss flora is diverse, with around 390 species recorded in the last 25 years - just over half the number of species in Britain as a whole. This section contains mosses from Sphagnum to Leucobryum.
