British Arachnids

Wolf Spider (Pisaura mirabilis)

Garston Wood RSPB Reserve, Dorset

A common, fairly large (by British standards!) spider.  Wolf spiders are so-called because they pursueand chase down prey - they do not make webs for catching food.  This one crawled into my moth trap one night, and, as you can see it helped itself to an easy meal!

Orb-weaver (Neoscona adianta)

Harvestman (Mitopus morio)

Ben Lawers NNR, Perthshire

Recognisable by the wavy dark 'saddle' marking on the top of the abdomen, P.opilio is a common harvestman throughout Britain.  This one was photographed on a mountainside at an altitude of 1000m.
