British Moths

Britain has a very well studied moth fauna, and in recent years moth trapping has become more popular among amateurs (like me!). There are about 900 larger (macro) moth species in Britain, and thousands of (usually) smaller micro-moths. At first the variety can be overwhelming to a beginner, but there are excellent reference guides to help you get started. Also, there is the bonis of not having to leave home to study your own assortment of these animals!

The photos in this section are moths from my travels in Dorset, plus those from home in Derbyshire, and a few from Scotland and elsewhere.
